ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jim McDowell’s career as a studio potter spans 35 years. He is known for creating face jugs inscribed with messages on the backs and sides.
As a 4th generation nephew of an enslaved Jamaican potter named Evangeline, who made face jugs, McDowell connects his work to the spiritual rituals of African potters once enslaved in America and the Caribbean Islands.
McDowell is listed as one of “300 Names Defining the U.S.A.’s Creative Landscape” as a Keeper of Culture in the August 2023 Wallpaper Magazine. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Nasher Museum at Duke University, Durham, NC; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois, Champaign; Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA; North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh and the Birmingham Museum of Art, AL.
Jim McDowell works out of his studio in Weaverville, NC.
