Lake City Community Outreach is partnering with SC Thrive to provide community members with a FREE training—“Adult Mental Health First Aid.”  Adult Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that helps community members identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Just as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training helps a layperson without medical training, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. With the huge opioid crisis we are going through, this training will benefit anyone that attends!

By the end of the training, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify the prevalence of mental illnesses in the U.S. and their emotional and economic cost.
  • Identify potential warning signs and risk factors of depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, and substance use disorders.
  • Demonstrate a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect to professional care.
  • Identify resources available to help someone with a mental health problem.

After completion of the entire course, each participant will be certified as a Mental Health First Aider. Attendees only have to attend one date—March 13th or March 15th.  Two dates were provided to allow for flexibility.
